Unease.

“Well, we must wait for the future to show.”
― Virginia Woolf, To the Lighthouse

To come to a point where your dreams move away from your reach is hard.

The hubs and I have discussed putting our house on the market for months. We worked all summer on our home to prepare it to sell. When months zoomed by and it got colder and we weren’t ready yet, we decided to hold off until Spring.

We have many reasons we want to move. We need a better layout of rooms so that when the times comes that we plan for a second child (!!!), our bedrooms are on the same floor. Our neighborhood is not necessarily family friendly. I hate the schools in our district. Our main (and frankly only used) bathroom is very small. The house is over 80 years old. I want to feel safe walking out after dark.

But really, it’s the bedroom thing that’s got me wanting to move. We have two bedrooms on the main floor, and our finished attic acts as a third bedroom. A third bedroom with stairs so steep that we struggled to get a full size bed through the doorway. Meaning: I don’t think we could get a queen size bed up there. If we have a second child – I don’t want that baby or Abby being upstairs while the rest of us are down. The attic doesn’t maintain a comfortable temperature in the winter OR summer. To me, I have a hard time making this house work with a second child.

And talks of that second child have begun.

Unfortunately, realizations of how much debt we’ve accumulated have also come to light.

In this equation, our plan of moving out of this house (which has contributed to our mounting debt) have in essence been shut down because of our debt.

It is our own fault. I knew eventually this would happen. Denial is a powerful thing.

And now? I can’t allow myself to accept this as fact.

“If the market were different, we’d sell our house for a profit instead of breaking even, and we could pay off that debt.”

“Maybe we’ll win the lottery.”

“This isn’t a huge deal-breaker. We can still get a mortgage.”

When I think about it enough, my heart breaks hard and I nearly start to cry. To me, moving was a step towards the future, and I don’t want to put my dreams on hold. I want to know everything will still fall into place. That the choices we made in the past are not totally destroying our dreams for the future.

This is not the end of the world. If push comes to shove, we can make this house work. Knowing that we’ll be paying for our financial mistakes instead of living our lives in a new home? Hurts. Like. Hell.

Milestones: State Fair Edition

(Sidenote before I dive into this post – HOW IN HOLY HELL IS IT ALREADY SEPTEMBER?! AndPlusAlso, my birthday is next week. Start thinking of gifts to send me starting…now.)

This past weekend, we visited the State Fair. “The Great Minnesota Get-Together,” as they call it…which I think is rather hilarious since it makes it sound like an event with all your old friends, when really it’s more like “weirdos and families crawling out of the woodwork to stuff their faces and ride totally unsafe rides.” (No, REALLY.)

The hubs and I try to make it to the fair at least twice every year – once with friends (AKA adult night) and once with Abbers. This year was no different. Saturday was our adult night – we went on some rides, had a couple beers and ate until there was no room left; Pronto Pups (corn dogs), Dippin’ Dots, Fried Pickles, Garlic Fries…my mouth is watering. The hubs played a game and won me a stuffed unicorn (from Despicable Me – “IT’S SO FLUFFY!”). ANYWHO, Sunday rolled around and we waited until dinner-time to head to the fair since it was hotter than Hades and being around a bunch of sweaty people eating in the hot sun is not an ideal situation.

We grabbed some french fries and headed to the Kidway (like the Midway, but only for kids) and Abby was eager to go on rides. She’s a huge fan of the rides at the Mall of America, so this was like heaven, and made a bee-line for the bumper boats. The lovely carnie said she was tall enough to ride by herself. Josh and I looked at each other, knowing THIS was going to be her first solo ride, and agreed. I handed over the 4 tickets it cost to take the ride, and she was off.

Like a boss.

Granted, that whole “steering” thing was an idea she didn’t grasp well, as she pretty much spun in a circle the whole time, but she LOVED it. As soon as that ride was over, she wanted more – but the hubs and I decided to join her for those. That was enough growing up for one day.

Then we made our way to the Midway, where we played more games, and Abby won herself a totally generic Nemo fish, and the hubs won her a lion. We walked by the side-show tent, and other rides, and I got excited for the day when she and I can go on the big rides together. We’ll take this one step at a time, though.

Internet = Sparkly Unicorns

(Sparkly Unicorns = Magic. Therefore, the Internet = Magic.)

Many moons ago, when I was newly with child (and let’s face it, before that even), I was on a website called The Bump. I met many wonderful ladies there – many of whom I’ve since met in person and have become internet friends with.

One of those ladies I referred to as “Bacon.” It became apparent that we lived in a fairly close proximity to each other, but we never met in person. Until Yo Gabba Gabba. Finally we’d broken the ice. We became Facebook friends (which is pretty serious, as far as I’m concerned) and had windows into each others FB lives.

When Bacon…I mean Melissa was looking to build her photography portfolio, I quickly volunteered myself and the whole family, because DUH.

I should revise the formula in the beginning. Melissa = Sparkly Unicorns = Magic.

Magic.

I believe in Fairies.

This past weekend, we had our second visit from a fairy for Abbers. This time, it was the Binkie Fairy. (The Bottle Fairy made an appearance a little while ago.)

This is something we’ve been discussing for a while. It was more difficult of a decision to make than the bottles. This (aside from diapers which I will not miss at all) felt like her last tie to babyhood. She still used it for naps, bedtime, car rides and general soothing. And MY GOD did it ever work. With her binkie and blankie both in use, her eyes would almost just shut in a Pavlovian response, unable to stay open. It made her so happy.

However, she’s getting to the age where I just didn’t want to see her tied to the binkie anymore. God forbid we leave the house without one (and it happened on occasion) and it’s meltdown city. Not to mention, she more times than not just held it in her mouth like a cigar, and one of her front teeth is showing the real damage – it’s crooked and seems like it just isn’t coming in all the way.

The stogie hold. She's got it down to a science.

The crooked tooth. "Shrek teeth" as Uncle Ernie calls them.

So the decision was made. Again, we would plan it for a Friday night. (You know, so we could potentially not sleep all weekend while she cried a sadly, lonely cry for her “binkie-bink.”) We could collect all the binkies from the house, and put them in a bag. This time leaving them at the back door. Then, in the middle of the night, the Binkie Fairy would come and collect all the binkies to give to new babies who needed them (totally gross and not hygienic at all) and in turn, she would leave a present for Abby. Or he. Who am I to judge.

The binks, the balloons from the Binkie Fairy and leaving it by the back door.

The hubs and I decided this gift needed to be huge. This is a big deal and probably difficult to give up cold turkey, so it needed to be something she couldn’t just throw at us yelling “GIVE ME MY BINKIE-BINK! I DON’T LIKE ANYTHING!” With spring in full bloom and only an empty, unused dog kennel as a totally unsafe plaything in the backyard, we opted for a playhouse. And then grabbed a slide as a second gift.

When settling in for the night, she did pretty well. She was exhausted, so it went much easier than expected, although right before falling asleep, she was pretty much crying, saying “I don’t want any presents! I want binkie-bink!” Like I said though, fell asleep anyway.

The next morning, the first words out of her mouth were “I don’t want presents.” Typical. So, the hubs and I took turns getting up and arranging things in a pretty manner, and then I came into our bedroom, where Abby and the hubs were laying.

“Abby – I just looked. The binkie fairy came. You’re going to be so excited!”

She finally got up, and saw a couple smaller things we got her, a bubble gun and a new box of Aden + Anais swaddle blankets – her blankie of choice. Then we showed her outside. She went down the steps in her little pajamas yelling “A PLAYHOUSE! SHE BROUGHT ME A PLAYHOUSE!” SO stoked.

The happy lady. If you look hard enough you can see our neighbors dried up Christmas tree.

We spent the morning putting everything together. And spent the whole weekend binkie free. She struggles at nighttime, naptime, or when she’s exhausted and wants to soothe herself. She gets by though.

I consider us lucky. She’s getting a cold, and this is usually when she wants it the most, but she’s been okay. I know not everyone will have the same, low-key results we did. (We still hear “I don’t WANT my clubhouse, momma. I don’t want ANYTHING!” on occasion. So we’re not whine-free.)

Best decision we’ve made in a while.

Has anyone else tried this tactic? I would love to hear more results! Or let me know if you decide to try this!

I can FINALLY spill the beans.

No. I’m not pregnant. But thanks for assuming!

I WON A TRIP TO TURKS & CAICOS AT BLOGHER! I know, that was so 2011. Here’s the story:

While at BlogHer, Playskool had a booth set up with the steps to Sesame Street and a contest. Tweet a picture of yourself sitting on the steps of Sesame Street along with some prefab tweet, and you’ll be entered to win!

On August 18th, I got an email saying I’d won. Then I pooped my pants. Then I read the email again. Then I had a seizure, then read the email again…and so on and so on. It was real. We (all three of us!) were scheduled to go on September 30th, the hubs’ birthday. We didn’t have much time, so we immediately went and got Abby her first passport.

cutest passport photo ever.

Then Hurricane Irene hit and damaged the Beaches resort. We had our fingers crossed it would reopen for our trip, but alas they wouldn’t. Our trip was postponed with no idea when we would be going. (In all honesty, the hubs and I were both in the midst of dealing with our awesome dual anxiety issues, so it was probably for the better.) Finally we got the word, we’d be getting a trip voucher to cash in at any time in the next year (with blackout dates, of course). We still didn’t know when we were going. And being the supersticioius jerk I am, I didn’t want to get excited (read: post anything about this awesomeness) until we had solid dates set.

Well, we have our dates, though not our first choice (which was early March) – but we’ll be going mid-April. WE’RE GOING TO THE TURKS & CAICOS IN APRIL. I’m so excited.

So, there you have it. We’re going on a trip! (In April.) BUT WE’RE ACTUALLY GOING!

In other news, I’m going to attempt the Feb photo a day thing, again. Maybe I’ll actually stick to it this time. :)
